Hair Product Reviews of Sulfate-Free Brands

!±8± Hair Product Reviews of Sulfate-Free Brands

Sulfate-free hair product brands are growing in popularity as sulfates, chlorides and parabens are considered the root to many hair and scalp problems.

The use of SLS - sodium lauryl sulfate and paraben-rich preservatives have been shown to accelerate the fading of color treatments, leave hair vulnerable to heat and chemical damage, and be the lead suspect in the cause of such scalp problems such as dandruff, scalp psoriasis, dermatitis and excessive oiliness.

While the blame is certainly up for discussion, many consumers have found that using sulfate free brands have helped their scalp heal and become more healthy. This could be the result of allergies to the chemicals, active ingredients, or the use of other styling aids.

Either way, savvy consumers and expert stylists are increasingly searching our non-sulfate brands - especially if they are coloring their hair or routinely get perm, straightening, or chemical treatments.

Look for the top reviews to guide your decision

While reviews are pretty thin related to non-SLS and paraben products, most reviewers and analyst agree there is a wide difference in the effectiveness, fragrance, and tactile pleasure among the few competing brands that have made towards the top.

Why is this?

Primarily because sulfate-free products have had a hard time finding adequate replacements for SLS. While sodium lauryl sulfate has been an easy replacement, its "good sister" sodium laureth sulfate has been much harder. The largest problem been effective foaming and cleansing and acceptance by the consumer.

What do we mean by this? Well, SLS is a surfactant cleanser responsible for the suds, bubbles and foam. This "foaming action" dissolves oil, dislodges dirt, and cleans the hair. Reviewers found the lack of early SLS replacements didn't offer the foaming level consumers wanted or would be effective for deep cleaning - no matter how safe or gentle.

Brands such as sfree®, Pureology, Kenra and Biolage have all developed very effective products over the last 12-18 months. There replacement surfactants work very well and they have branched including clarifying and hydrating products as well.
